Travels By Jango, Rhino and Helios tandem
Apart from the first day, which was really just an afternoon, today was our shortest day at only 34 kilometres. And what a day it was! 200 metres of climbing in just over 20 kilometres was hardly strenuous, and it was followed by a gentle descent into the tiny village of Altnaharra, along the Strath Vagastie. The weather was so warm and sunny we were down to single layers again and, for once, we had the wind behind us!
Just under 5 kilometres out of Lairg we passed the final road junction of the day – after that there was only the A 836 – a single track road with passing places. The scenery was superb and the road surface good. There was relatively little traffic and most drivers gave us a friendly wave as we let them pass.
Apparently the mountains are popular with hill-walkers – for us they formed a beautiful backdrop to the gently rolling road. We enjoyed today, and we arrived soon after 14:00, but our hosts were not in the least bit fazed – we were plied with numerous cups of tea and also biscuits, quite apart from the ones in the room. The room itself is very comfortable and has a view of Ben Klibreck. Leonard approves.
